BIS Steel Standards Clarified – Key Implications for Industry Stakeholders

On 2nd July 2025, the Ministry of Steel issued a crucial clarificatory order regarding BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) compliance. The update reinforces that all intermediate materials used in manufacturing BIS-certified steel products must themselves meet BIS standards.

It’s important to note that this is not a new Quality Control Order (QCO), but rather a much-needed clarification to ensure consistency across the steel supply chain.

Why this clarification matters:

  • Aligns input materials with final BIS-certified output
  • Prevents dumping of surplus or substandard global steel into Indian markets
  • Ensures a level playing field between domestic manufacturers and importers
  • Clarifies that integrated steel plants are not burdened
  • Dismisses widespread assumptions about price escalation due to quality regulations

What does this mean for your business?

This clarification has a wide-reaching impact, particularly for importers, CHAs, manufacturers, and logistics firms engaged in the steel supply chain. With India’s steel capacity expected to reach 400 MT by 2035, regulatory clarity is essential to avoid compliance risks and ensure product integrity.

At Hoysala International Growth Hub, we believe this step strengthens India’s global competitiveness and quality benchmarks. It sends a clear message that every stage of production, from raw input to finished product, must meet national standards.

Let’s Discuss

We’d like to hear from professionals working in steel trade, compliance, policy, and manufacturing:

  • How will this clarification impact your sourcing and documentation process?
  • Will this affect your current or planned imports or exports?
  • What changes do you foresee in the global supply chain or pricing patterns?
  • Is this a long-term win for India’s Make in India and export goals?

Feel free to reply with your insights, questions, or real-world observations. Let’s build a community that stays ahead by staying informed.
